Here’s a scene from later in the series – as it started to mature – with Margaret and Hawkeye.
Margaret, Hawkeye, and Radar where the only three characters who were in the whole 11 years of the show. Hawkeye, was funny and had a good heart, but I have to identify with Margaret Houlihan who was the only female main character, though nurse Kelly was given more of a role over time. Who was your favorite MASH character? It’s hard for me to pick one. I never get tired of watching MASH reruns.
How many years was MASH on? Wait while I look that up… meandering down a side stream…. The Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH) refers to a United States Army medical unit serving as a fully functional hospital in a combat area of operations.

okay, my stream has been interrupted trying to think of the word to describe the men in the MASH book, because it was a lot more about the doctors who were somewhat lacking in integrity when it came to women more so than the TV docs. Those who were medical personnel served in Korea in Mobile Army Surgical Hospitals (MASH units), on board hospital ships, in MEDEVAC aircraft, and in hospitals in Japan, Hawaii, and the USA that were receiving the wounded from Korea. The book was okay, but showed the characters as much more….
The show had a good mix of humor, drama, and thought provoking messages. It was interesting to watch how the TV show MASH changed over the years with the characters growing deeper, yet still using humor. Here’s my dad’s hat which I don’t think I will ever be able to get rid of. Henry was a goofball, but he was a good guy. The Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, or MASH, concept was first deployed by the U.S. He told me that the doctors there acted crazy just like on M.A.S.H.Īmong my dad’s stash of MASH memorabilia is a hat he made to look something like Henry Blake’s hat. The hit television show was loosely based on the 1970 Robert Altman film of the same name and even more loosely on a 1968 novel, MASH: A Novel About Three Army Doctors, by former U.S. It wasn’t a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital, but something similar. This view is a list-display of military vehicle images and captions, each with a link to the original size photo. Dad was in something like a MASH unit in Korea after he was wounded in the leg. and, watching it with him, I came to love it, too. The first thing I thought of was mashed potatoes which I really love if they are homemade. The comedy was different too, very Abbott and Costello/Laurel and Hardy/Marx Brothers, that made the show funny, quick one liners, a straight man/funny man, things that don't seem to be present as much anymore.Today’s prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is: “mash. Those little things (To me, this is just my opinion as an old fart) helped make MASH what it was/is even to this day and would be hard to reboot with the respect the original deserves.Īnother option is to remake the series, same era (1950's Korea), same issues but refreshed with a new cast, which I would be game for, but trying to have that same chemistry/environment in a modern ear would be hard to pull off and still call it MASH. Getting things sent from the States took months (Hawkeye's ribs, the bathtub to name a few). The old timey shows didn't have that, they were simple, one outgoing line from the camp, finding physical and mental entertainment in the form of pranks and just general stupid fun. These units saved many lives on the battlefield of Korea and Vietnam. Everything is at the touch of your fingers and you can get nearly everything without much wait time. The MASH unit, which stands for mobile Army surgical hospital were able to travel on the front lines, ensuring that soldiers were never far from care, whether they needed life-saving surgery or a simple fix of a broken bone. Think about the modern day, communication ability is at an all time high with social media, texting, etc. The series followed a group of soldiers during the Korean War. What was great about the old timey shows was how simple they were. Personal Comments - 8055th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital - US Army - Korean. the Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) was one of the most iconic TV shows of the '70s.
While I would like to see something like a reboot I just don't think it would work in the "modern era".
