When reading about him, I did question why he talks so much about his relationship with God, yet he seems to love for the wrong reasons. The Bluest Eye – “Spring” Questions Directions: Answer the following questions using the book. I believe that this upbringing causes Soaphead to become obsessed with whiteness, cleanliness, and being young. I thought it was very different that Soaphead's family members only marry people with light-skin and if that is not possible, they marry one another. Soaphead Church is another example of how highly the characters of this book hold outward appearances. I also believe that these conflicting feelings about himself and life lead him to rape Pecola. I think that because of all of these disappointments in Cholly's life, he becomes indifferent, and even after marriage, feels unhappy, guilty, and trapped. The longing to belong, which is present in most of the characters, is also present in Cholly who searches to find his father and is let down by being cursed at and turned away. The power of whites is also present in Cholly's life when a group of white men ruined his first sexual experience with a girl. I also found pity for Cholly Breedlove because of his abandonment by his mother as a child and the death of his caretaker, his Aunt Jimmy. In reality, happiness comes from inner goodness and truly loving and needing others. I believe that this isolation, and her obsession with movies, begin her belief that happiness comes from orderliness, cleanliness, and outward beauty. After marrying Cholly, Pauline again feels isolated by the women in Ohio because of her outward appearance. Breedlove after learning that as a child she continually felt isolated from others including her family and had the responsibility of caring for her two younger siblings. This feeling of isolation reinforces the need for human affection and warmth, which her own daughter is now searching for. I found this season to be very interesting because it also describes the childhood of some of the characters that we have so far looked down upon.
This to me is very sad because it reinforces for Pecola that even her own mother is subject to white superiority. When Pecola accidentally spills cobbler at the house of the white family her mother works for, Pecola's mother pushes her down and immediately tends to the small white girl that lives in the house. There is also evidence of the theme of white superiority that is continued in this season. The girls do not know what "ruined" means but because they see some of the prostitutes as "fat," that outward appearance must be an evil to avoid. This is when I believe the conflict between inner and outer beauty is again present. Claudia and Frieda overhear someone say that Frieda may be "ruined" like the prostitutes. During Spring, Frieda is inappropriately touched by Henry which confuses the girls even more about sexuality and beauty.
